Understanding Your Water Quality Report
If your property is on a utility, the annual water quality report is the most useful free document you have. It is also widely misread.
What the report is
Community water systems publish an annual water quality report — a Consumer Confidence Report — summarizing monitoring results for the previous year. EPA maintains consumer guidance on these reports and what they must include.
Which parts matter for a treatment decision
- The disinfectant in use, since chlorine and chloramine call for different media selection.
- Detected constituents and their reported ranges, not only the averages.
- Any reported exceedance or violation, and the utility's explanation.
- Hardness, where reported — though it is often better measured at the property.
- The system name and ID, which confirms you are reading the report for your supply.
What the report cannot tell you
The report describes water in the distribution system during a monitoring period. It does not describe your building's internal plumbing, a long service line, an old water heater, or seasonal variation at your tap.
It also does not cover private wells at all. Well owners rely on their own testing, and Florida's health department publishes guidance for that.
How we use it
In a consultation we locate the current report for the utility serving your address, note the disinfectant and any relevant detected constituents, and use that as the starting point for whether additional testing is warranted before selecting equipment.
