Hardness treatment

Water Softeners and Hard-Water Treatment

Hard water is water carrying dissolved calcium and magnesium. It shows up as scale on fixtures and glass, spotting after washing, and more soap or detergent needed for the same result. Two different technologies are commonly offered for it, and the distinction matters.

What this treatment does

  • A conventional water softener uses ion exchange to remove hardness minerals and replace them with sodium or potassium, then regenerates the resin on a cycle.
  • A salt-free conditioner does not remove hardness. It changes how minerals behave so they are less likely to form adherent scale. It is a conditioner, not a softener.
  • Both approaches target scale, but only ion exchange reduces measured hardness.
  • Softening protects water heaters, fixtures and appliances from scale accumulation.

What it does not do

  • Softening does not filter chlorine, sediment or dissolved contaminants — that is a separate filtration decision.
  • Salt-free conditioning does not lower a hardness test result, and should never be presented as a softener.
  • Softening is not a drinking-water treatment. Households often add a drinking-water system alongside it.
  • Neither approach is a health treatment. We do not make skin, hair or medical claims.

Suitability

Who might consider it

Suitability depends on the property and the supply, not on a general recommendation.

Common situations

  • Properties with visible scale on faucets, shower glass and appliances.
  • Households replacing water heaters or fixtures more often than expected.
  • Owners who want reduced detergent use and easier cleaning.
  • Properties where a drain or salt storage location is available for a regenerating system.

Information needed before selecting equipment

  • Measured hardness, expressed in grains per gallon.
  • Iron content, since iron affects resin selection and system life.
  • Household size and water use, which set regeneration frequency.
  • Drain access and space for a brine tank, or the constraints that point toward a conditioner instead.
  • Any local restriction on softener discharge.

What affects installation

  • Point-of-entry plumbing modifications with a bypass.
  • Drain line for regeneration discharge, installed to code with the required air gap.
  • Electrical outlet for the control valve.
  • Space for the resin tank plus brine tank, or a compact single-tank layout.
  • Ongoing access for salt delivery and lid clearance.

Maintenance and ownership

  • Salt or potassium is added periodically; frequency depends on hardness and water use.
  • Resin has a service life influenced by chlorine and iron exposure.
  • Control valves need occasional service; settings should be reviewed when occupancy changes.
  • Salt-free conditioners typically use a replaceable media cartridge rather than salt and drain.

What affects cost

  • Grain capacity and valve type.
  • Single-tank versus twin-tank configuration.
  • Iron pre-treatment where required.
  • Drain routing and electrical work.
  • Salt consumption and media replacement over time.

Pricing

How ClearCoast pricing works

We don't publish one-size prices because installed cost depends on your property, not on a product page. Every recommendation ends in a written quote you can review before anything is scheduled.

The cost factors for this service

  • Grain capacity and valve type.
  • Single-tank versus twin-tank configuration.
  • Iron pre-treatment where required.
  • Drain routing and electrical work.
  • Salt consumption and media replacement over time.

How you get a real number

  • You request a consultation and tell us the property type, water source and what prompted the enquiry.
  • We confirm the serving utility for your address and review the available water quality information.
  • We assess the installation conditions — point of entry, plumbing, space, drain and electrical — on site or from clear photos.
  • You receive a written quote separating equipment, installation scope and expected maintenance, valid for a stated period.
  • Nothing is scheduled until you approve the written quote; changes to scope are re-quoted, not assumed.

Your written quote lists the equipment, the installation scope, and the expected maintenance schedule separately, so you can compare it against any other proposal. If you would like to discuss payment options, mention it during your consultation and we will confirm what is currently available in writing. Read the installation cost guide for the full list of variables, or request your quote.

Equipment

HALO Water Systems — our main product line

ClearCoast's main product line is HALO whole-house water treatment equipment. HALO designs and manufactures its own valves, tanks and media for whole-home filtration, water softening and conditioning. Additional product lines are added as the catalogue is confirmed.

Questions

Water Softeners questions

Is a salt-free system a softener?

No. Salt-free conditioners change scale behavior without removing hardness minerals. If lowering measured hardness matters to you, ion exchange is the technology that does that.

How much salt will I use?

It depends on hardness, household size and how the system is set. That estimate belongs in a written recommendation for your property, not a generic figure.

Do I need a softener and a filter?

Often yes, because they address different things. Sequencing matters: filtration frequently goes upstream of softening to protect the resin.

Can a softener remove iron?

Some iron can be handled by a softener, but iron above certain levels usually needs dedicated pre-treatment to protect the resin.
